    Guatemalan Student Sponsorship
In the spring of 2014, eight adults from our congregation traveled to Chichicastenango, Guatemala for a work project with Pura Vida Ministries, a Colorado based, United Methodist Church affiliated, organization working with the people in that area to help assure that children have the means to obtain an education. At that time we entered into a sponsorship relationship with Edwin Samuel Och Mejia to provide funds for his education. The funds assure that he has a school uniform, supplies, and transportation to school. The funds also help his family with expenses so that he can attend school and not need to stay home and work.

When we were in Guatemala we met with Edwin, his mother, and his six sisters. His three older sisters were not able to complete school and now work with his mother making items to sell in the market. His father is in ill health and is the Methodist pastor in his small village. Pastors in Guatemala do not receive wages.

The children in our SPARKS program have been learning about Guatemala and Edwin since 2014. They correspond with him regularly. Thanks everyone for your 2017 donations to help with Edwin’s sponsorship.  We exceeded our goal!!! The additional funds will be saved towards next year`s sponsorship.

The Mission Team of the United Methodist Church of Steamboat Springs represents all of you as we respond to the needs of people in our community, our region and our world. We welcome new members and encourage you to share your ideas with us about groups or individuals who need our support. The Mission Team for 2017 includes Bette Carlson, Penny Deihl (Associate Chair), Donna Downing, Linda Nolte, Janet Panebaker, Lynn Ross-Bryant (Chair), Chayla Rowley (Secretary), Mayling Simpson, Sandy Spiegel, Doug Sprenkle (Treasurer), and Pat Zabel, with wisdom and assistance from Pastoral Assistant Laurie Edwards.

In 2016 we were involved in the following mission projects:
Internationally, we supported our missionaries in the Dominican Republic, Gordon and Ardell Graner ($2500), Partners in Development in Haiti ($500), and UMCOR Haiti relief ($800).

Regionally, we supported Intermountain ($1200), which provides services of all kinds to children in Wyoming; After Hours ($500), an urban outreach mission in Denver; the Rocky Mountain Conference of the UMC ($1000), and Denver Inner City Parish ($300).

Locally, we supported Lift-Up ($3600); Sk8 Church ($900); Routt to Work ($500); the BJT Foundation ($300 plus $700 from the Strawberry Festival), a local group that helps support lower income students at CMC; funds toward a dental chair for South Routt Medical ($1000); funds to support student scholarships for kindergarten through Integrated Community ($1200), United Way Holiday Exchange Market ($500), and Soroco Preschool ($300).

The Mission Team welcomes new members.
The team meets the third Tuesday of every month and needs a wide variety of talents for the various projects we undertake. Part of our job is deciding which groups - at the international, national, and local levels - we want to support each year. Equally important is the job of engaging the congregation in our various mission projects. We'd love to have you join us!
